Abstract: An alarm system suitable for pervasive healthcare in rural areas is presented. Taking advantage of ZigBee features, users can move freely around their habitual environment while enjoying constant protection. The resulting system is cost-effective, easily deployed (no wiring is needed) and the mobile device’s batteries last for months. The user interface is a key issue when working with the elderly and those with disabilities. To ensure proper usability and avoid abandoning of the device, an alarm-detection procedure has been developed and contrasted with end-users. The application scenario is the isolated village of Fortanete, Spain, where the selfsustainability of the system is essential. In this environment, management of the alarm relies upon the user’s relatives and neighbours to solve any problems that arise. Privacy and ethical considerations have also been addressed, as this kind of system can potentially invade the users’privacy; cognitive disabilities of the users also make it mandatory.
1 Introduction
The aging population is a well known problem in developed countries. Among the elderly, injuries from falls are one of their major fears, and it’s also a concern for their relatives.
Some authors estimate the incidence of falls for people aged over 75 to be at least 30% per year [1]. Ultimately, concerns about falls and whether help will be available in the case of an emergency dissuade the elderly from living at home [2].
As a result, the elderly commonly decide to move to rest homes, which frequently have a negative effect on their health and subjective quality of life, resulting in high costs to the individual, their family and/or the social welfare system.
Fortunately, many initiatives are underway to prolong the time that people can live at home. We anticipate further development of many fall-detection systems that enable those in need to receive assistance quickly, even when they are not able to request assistance themselves (e.g.when the subject is immobilised or unconscious).
Moreover, the combination of these systems with telemedicine enables a closer monitoring and collaboration of various experts in making diagnoses [3]. Most of these......
