三维城市模型的定义是：“地球表面及属于市区的相关对象的数字表述。”换句话说，就是三维城市模型可以将建筑物的外观处理成三维的三角模型以实现在一种数字媒体中表现一个城市景观。可想而知，这样的模型有很多应用；最重要的几个应用如下：

①城市规划

②灾难场景的分析及模拟

③监控应用

④虚拟文物保护

⑤虚拟现实

⑥游戏及娱乐

三维城市模型应用的一个最典型例子就是Google-Earth。Google-Earth是谷歌公司推出的通过卫星视点浏览地球的一种在线应用。在这个应用中的一个特殊方案就是三维建筑，它可以实现城市的三维演示，但是这个功能仅适用于那些已经将三维模型插入到这个应用中的城市。例如，如果你不能浏览雅典遗城的三维模型；却可以浏览纽约。此外，不同城市的三维模型的质量不同；例如当你浏览纽约的时候，其建筑物外观的分辨率比较低；而华盛顿的重要建筑如白宫的分辨率很高，但是其他建筑的某些部分没有纹理。因为许多应用过去已经提出，三维模型正被世界上绝大多数城市引用；一个三维城市演示的好的例子就是柏林，整个德国可以在安装目录后通过Google-Earth浏览得到（图1）。

我的讲座和这次报告是要描述一个题为“三维城市模型的快速生成”的研究，这个研究在加州大学伯克利分校的EECS系的Avideh Zakhor教授的监督下开展。

他们的目标是提供一个三维城市建模的方法概述如下：

①构建一个三维城市模型可以用作步行浏览模型和飞行浏览模型

②使三维城市建模的进程加快，不仅体现在数据处理阶段，还体现在数据收集阶段

③使整个过程自动化

④使过程可伸缩

⑤保证模型效果逼真

2、UCB的三维城市建模方法

为了提供一个步行浏览和飞行浏览的模型，UCB中的调查者提供了两种独立的模型：车载模型和机载模型。然后，他们通过注册和融合过程实现与最终的三维城市模型的结合

为了完成车载建模，他们创建了一个数据采集系统，该系统包含两个LMS二维激光扫描设备和一个数字化的广角镜头彩色摄像机。这个模型的主要目的是为步行浏览任务提供高分辨率的建筑物外观。

为了完成机载建模，他们采用DSM（数字表面模型）图像和一些机载数码照片。DSM是一种飞机上采用的广角图像采集设备。

构建这两种原始模型的过程将在下一节中做较详细的论述。

3 车载建模

1 Introduction 

3D city models are defined as “digital representations of the Earth’s surface and related objects belonging to urban areas”. In other words, it deals with 3D triangulated model of fa?ade of buildings which can be used to represent a city in a digital media. Many applications can be imagined for such a model; the most important ones are: 

①Urban planning 

②Training and simulation for disaster scenarios

③Surveillance applications 

④Virtual heritage conservation 

⑤Virtual reality 

⑥Gaming and Entertainment

On of the most tangible samples for application of 3D city models can be found on Google-Earth. Google-Earth is an online application supported by Google Company for browsing the earth from satellite point of view. There is a special option in this application, called 3D Buildings, for showing 3D demo of cities, but it works only for those cities which their 3D model has been inserted to the application. For example, if you brows Athens, GA you can not see the 3D demo of the city; while it is provided for New York, NY. Moreover, quality of 3D model for different cities is not the same; for example, when you brows New York, fa?ade of building has low resolution; while for Washington DC resolution for important building such as Whitehouse is high, but other buildings have been left as some blocks without texture. Because of many applications mentioned before, 3D models are being provided for most great cities of the world; a good example of 3D city demo belongs to Berlin, Germany which can be browsed through Google-Earth after its instalation (figure 1).......
